Although Gauriganga Municipality is connected to the Mahendra Highway, it remains a rural area. About 80% of the population depends on agriculture, while the remaining 20% rely on foreign employment, local self-employment, and trade. The area is inhabited mainly by Brahmin, Chhetri, Janajati, Dalit, and other Rajhi communities. In addition, there are significant settlements of freed Kamaiya (bonded laborers) and squatters. Most residents follow Hinduism, though communities of other religions also live here.

The total population of Chaumala, Ward No. 2 of Gauriganga Municipality, was 4,060 in 2021 (2078 B.S.), with a total area of 5.97 square kilometers. Most households have low income, and many individuals migrate to India and Gulf countries to earn money for household expenses and their children’s education. Economically disadvantaged groups such as the lower class, squatters, freed Kamaiya, Dalit, Janajati, and children of parents working abroad often attend this school. Meanwhile, wealthier families, traders, and employees tend to send their children to private schools in the locality or in cities like Dhangadhi.

The fact that children of aware and educated parents are not enrolled in this school shows limited parental attention toward it. To draw parents’ focus toward the school, regular interactions, coordination, and awareness programs are conducted with them.

Establishment Year: The school was founded in 1959 A.D. (2016 B.S.) and received official approval in 1962 A.D. (2019 B.S.).

Location: The school is situated in the former Chaumala Village Development Committee, Ward No. 2, now Gauriganga Municipality, Ward No. 2, Old Market, Chaumala, Kailali District, Sudurpashchim Province.

History: Formal education in the present-day Gauriganga Municipality (formerly Masuriya, Chaumala, and Udasipur VDCs) began only after 1958 A.D. (2015 B.S.). On the day of Shree Panchami in 1959 A.D. (2016 B.S.), Shree Surya Prakash Rana invited a teacher from Birgunj and started classes in one of the rooms of his palace, according to local accounts. At that time, the school was operated under the leadership of Chairman Shree Haridwari Rana and Secretary Shree Lok Bahadur Shahi. Initially, it was run as “Chaumala Primary School,” which later became the foundation of the present Shree Malika Secondary School.

In the first year, only three students were enrolled, and due to the very low number of students, the school could not obtain government recognition. After continuous efforts by local social workers and education enthusiasts, the school received official recognition on 29 February 1963 A.D. (Falgun 16, 2019 B.S.). Classes were then conducted in a temporary hut under a tree within the current school premises. With the active involvement of teacher Tek Bahadur Khadka, educational progress gradually advanced. After three years of operation, a three-room permanent building was constructed in 1963 A.D. (2019 B.S.), supported by a grant of Rs. 1,100 from the District Education Office, along with the official approval letter for primary school operation. Thus, 1963 A.D. (2019 B.S.) is regarded as the official establishment year of the school.

Under the leadership of Chairman Ishwaridatt Bhatt and Headmaster Krishna Bahadur K.C., the school received approval to operate as a Lower Secondary School on 24 April 1979 A.D. (2036/1/10 B.S.) and was renamed Shree Malika Lower Secondary School. In 1981 A.D. (2038 B.S.), with special support from then Pradhan Panch Deep Bahadur Chand, a six-room L-shaped permanent building was constructed.

With growing community support and satisfaction with the school’s progress, approval was granted to operate Secondary-level classes on 25 June 1989 A.D. (2046/3/11 B.S.). Since 1991 A.D. (2048 B.S.), students have been appearing in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations. In 1995 A.D. (2052 B.S.), the school received permanent approval for the Secondary level and was formally established as Shree Malika Secondary School.

Recognizing education as the foundation of multifaceted development, and in response to community demand, the school began Higher Secondary classes on 29 June 2006 A.D. (2063/3/14 B.S.), under the leadership of Chairman Lokendra Bahadur Shahi and Headmaster Ramchhabila Chaudhary, after receiving temporary affiliation. The school was then upgraded to Shree Malika Higher Secondary School.

With continuous support from former chairpersons and headmasters such as Dilliram Acharya, Dasharath Tiwari, Chandra Bahadur Thapa, Kanshi Ram Shamar, Janak Bahadur Saund, Prem Raj Bhatt, and Shambhusharanlal Karn, the school expanded to operate classes from Early Childhood Development (ECD) up to Grade 12 simultaneously. At present, the School Management Committee is chaired by Shree Tej Bahadur Diyokoti, and the Principal is Shree Ratan Prasad Jaishi.

The school operates bus services for student transportation and has introduced English-medium instruction in Grades 1–3 and 6–10. In Grades 11 and 12, courses in Commerce, Education, and Law are offered. The school has consistently achieved excellent results in board examinations of Grades 8, 10, and 12. Today, Shree Malika Secondary School stands as a leading educational institution in the region, recognized as a model school for providing quality education. It is currently operating under the name Shree Malika Secondary School, located in Ward No. 2, Chaumala, Gauriganga Municipality.
